Can education prevent heart disease?
We all know about heart disease. No doubt you know of someone who has had a heart attack or stroke or other heart condition. Some survive and do well, others survive but are permanently disabled and lastly others do not survive.
In fact, heart disease is the number one killer of Americans.

And strokes are the third highest cause of death. Some are not aware that heart disease is the number one cause of death in women. We tend to think of it as a man's disease but that's not true.
But our question today is can education prevent heart disease? Clearly the answer is no.Unless you have lived in a cave for the last 20 years you are aware of the factors that contribute to heart disease.
So obviously education has not lowered the death rate.
Part of the problem is that the things health professionals recommend to prevent heart disease may not sit too well with people.
The three major factors under our control to prevent heart disease are to stop smoking, get regular exercise and eat a healthy diet.
Stopping to smoke may be one one area where public education is finally winning out. People in America are smoking less and smoking is outlawed in so many places that people who smoke may feel guilty and give it up. Smoking is a major factor in heart disease so this is a good thing that smoking is no longer considered acceptable.
But asking folks to give up their fried foods such as french fries is asking a lot. Americans love their fast foods. and unfortunately most fast foods are fried...tacos, fried chicken, hamburgers. You name it, if it is a popular fast food, it is contributing to heart disease.
Education says you should eat more fruits, vegetables and less processed food. Cholesterol raises with the consumption of fried foods and cholesterol clogs arteries which could lead to heart disease.
And the last recommendation we hear of through heart prevention education is to exercise regularly. Our children are getting fatter as are the rest of us. We all need to exercise more to prevent heart disease as well as other disease such as diabetes.
So how can we prevent heart disease? Hopefully we will gain more appreciation for exercise and a good diet as we have for smoking. Maybe time will be the answer.
